WebP and AVIF without the upload tax

Modern CDNs ship WebP and AVIF to save bandwidth. That is great until you drag the saved file into Outlook, Word, an LMS, a print shop form, or a legacy CMS that only accepts JPG or PNG. Cloud converters fix the format—and see every pixel. LocalKit keeps the decode-and-re-encode loop inside your browser so email attachments and archive exports never cross the network as uploads.

    How conversion works

Your browser already knows how to paint WebP (and, on recent Chromium/Firefox builds, AVIF). We load the file as an image, draw it to a canvas, and call toBlob for JPEG or PNG. Quality defaults suit everyday photos. Batch drop several assets; download one-by-one or ZIP the set with fflate when you finish.

    Browser support notes

WebP is effectively universal on current desktop and mobile browsers. AVIF needs a relatively recent engine—update Safari if an AVIF will not open. When a file fails, the status line reports the error and the rest of the batch continues. HEIC files landing here by mistake should use the dedicated HEIC tool for a better decoder path.

    Color and quality expectations

Canvas uses the browser’s color pipeline. Typical sRGB photos look fine. Wide-gamut or HDR sources may tone-map. Always preview before deleting originals. If you need a specific byte budget after converting, open Image compress or exact KB resize—still local.

    Who this is for

Designers exporting assets from the web, support teams collecting user screenshots, students submitting coursework, and anyone who refuses to upload client comps to an anonymous converter. Pair with EXIF strip when the source image might contain GPS from a phone camera pipeline that wrapped WebP.

LocalKit’s differentiator versus FreeConvert-style sites is simple: no account, no upload, and the same trust badges on every tool page so you can verify the promise before dropping files.

    Frequently asked questions

Can LocalKit convert WebP to JPG offline?

Yes. After the page loads, WebP/AVIF decoding uses the browser’s built-in image decoder and canvas—no server round-trip for your pixels.

    Why won’t my AVIF open?

AVIF support depends on the browser. Current Chromium and Firefox generally decode AVIF; older Safari versions may not. Update your browser or convert on a machine with AVIF support.

Will colors look different after conversion?

Canvas re-encoding uses the browser’s color pipeline. Most sRGB photos look fine; wide-gamut or HDR sources may tone-map. Always preview before deleting originals.

Can I convert PNG to WebP here?

v1 focuses on WebP/AVIF → JPG/PNG for compatibility with older software. Encoding to WebP/AVIF in-browser is possible later; today the pain point we solve is opening modern formats in tools that reject them.
